As a clinic owner, you are likely no stranger to the pursuit of knowledge. Whether it is attending the latest physiotherapy symposium, completing a new osteopathy certification, or reading every business book on the market, the desire to learn is often what drives health professionals to start their own practices. However, there is a common and frustrating phenomenon that many clinic owners face: despite having all the information, they are not seeing the results they desire.
In the UK healthcare industry, we are surrounded by talented clinicians who are stuck on a plateau. They are earning just enough to get by, working long hours, and feeling the constant pressure of administrative burdens. Meanwhile, other clinic owners seem to be scaling effortlessly, creating more freedom, and making a greater impact. The difference between these two groups rarely comes down to who has the most degrees or the best clinical skills. Instead, it comes down to a fundamental shift in mindset and a commitment to action over research.
The Research Trap: Why Insight is Not Enough
Many clinic owners fall into what I call the research trap. This is the habit of constantly consuming content: podcasts, webinars, articles, and books: without ever implementing what has been learnt. It feels like work, and it feels productive, but it is actually a form of procrastination. We tell ourselves that we just need one more piece of information before we can launch that new service, hire that first associate, or increase our prices.
Insight without action is worthless. You can have a profound realisation about why your patient numbers are dropping, but if you do not change your marketing behaviour, your clinic will stay exactly where it is. To move from the sidelines and into the game, you must be willing to stop being a passive consumer and start being an active implementer. Results do not come from what you know; they come from what you do with what you know.
Try It Before You Deny It
You cannot figure out how to grow your clinic from a distance. One of the biggest barriers to success is the tendency to dismiss new ideas before even trying them. Have you ever heard a marketing strategy or a management technique and immediately thought, "That won't work in my town," or "My patients won't like that"?
This sceptical mindset is a growth killer. To achieve different results, you must be willing to experiment and apply what you are learning. Think of your business like a clinical trial. You wouldn't dismiss a new treatment modality without seeing the data, so why do it with your business? Be willing to fail fast. If a new booking system or a social media strategy doesn't work, you haven't lost; you have simply gathered data that will help you learn faster. The goal is to move from theory to practice as quickly as possible.
Adopting the "Everything is Figureoutable" Philosophy
One of the most powerful mindset shifts any clinic owner can make is adopting the belief that everything is figureoutable. This concept, popularised by Marie Forleo, suggests that no matter what obstacle you face, there is a solution or a workaround if you are willing to look for it.
When you hit a ceiling in your clinic growth, it is easy to feel defeated. You might think that the local economy is too weak or that there aren't enough qualified staff in your area. However, if you truly care about your mission, you will find a way. This might involve changing your recruitment strategy, adjusting your pricing structure, or looking at your clinic's organisation through a different lens. If you do not believe you can figure things out, you will stagnate. Most problems are not brick walls; they are simply puzzles waiting for a creative solution.
Growth is Messy: Embracing the Discomfort
We often expect growth to be a linear, clean process. In reality, growth gets messy before it gets better. When you start implementing new systems or changing the way you lead your team, things might feel chaotic for a while. You might feel uncomfortable, out of your depth, or even tempted to go back to the old way of doing things because it felt safer.
This discomfort is actually a sign of progress. It means you are pushing past your current limits and building new neuroplasticity. If something does not make sense right now, do not let that stop your momentum. You can come back to the complex details later, but the most important thing is to keep moving forwards. Stay in action even when it feels messy, because the clarity you seek is found on the other side of the work.
The Power of Repetition and Neuroplasticity
Success is rarely the result of a single, heroic effort. Instead, it is the result of repetition. Repetition is how we rewire our habits and build the neuroplasticity required for lasting change. In your clinical work, you know that a patient won't recover from a chronic injury with just one exercise session; they need to repeat the movements daily to see results. Your business is no different.
Expect to face the same issues again and again, but at different levels of your business journey. You might master time management as a solo practitioner, only to find you need to relearn it when you manage a team of five. This isn't an accident or a sign of failure; it is how change happens. By consistently practising the right behaviours, you turn them into second nature, allowing you to focus on the next level of your clinic's evolution.
Accelerating Results Through Community
One of the fastest ways to bridge the gap between learning and doing is to surround yourself with a community of like minded professionals. Trying to figure everything out alone is a slow and often lonely process. When you apply these mindset shifts alongside others who have your back, you reach your goals faster.
A supportive community provides more than just advice; it provides momentum, creativity, and accountability. Being part of a group of clinic owners who are also committed to taking action helps you stay focused when things get difficult. It allows you to see that your challenges are not unique and that solutions are within reach. When you combine action with community, the results are often far greater than what you could achieve in isolation.
Moving Forwards: From Thinker to Doer
If you find yourself stuck on the sidelines, it is time to get honest about why. Are you overthinking? Are you letting your mindset convince you that a new idea won't work before you have even tried it? Or are you simply overloaded with information and lacking a clear path to implementation?
Remember, your clinic and the life you love are figureoutable. The only path to change is taking action. Start today by choosing one thing you have been researching or thinking about and implement it. Don't worry about it being perfect; just get it done. The most successful clinic owners are not the ones who know the most, but the ones who are willing to do the work, even when it is uncomfortable.
